The Beginning ....

The best place to start this blog is at the beginning.  I knew that.  That's where I meant to start.  It didn't happen though and for a few weeks now I have been regretting not starting.  To rectify this I thought I would go back to the beginning and start then.  I thought could back date my blog and try and remember how I felt and pretend I was in that place in that time.  I tried and it just wasn't happening. So I am going to have to start here  - its not the beginning but its a start.

This blog is all about our adventures in trying to become Ironmen.  Hopefully the finish of the blog will be us completing that challenge but if it never happens that will be fine as well.  As long as we have enjoyed all our new experiences along the way.

It all started on September 20th 2018. It had not our greatest year because of problems with Graeme's work situation.  For Graeme's birthday to cheer him up I decided to surprise him with flights and accommodation to see his son, Dan compete in his first Ironman in Barcelona.  It was an amazing experience.  Dan is a truly amazing athlete and we thrilled to be there to watch him.  He managed to do amazingly well in event finishing in 9 hours, getting a podium position of second in his age group and qualifying for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii.  An incredible achievement.  Hours of training and dedication.

It was very emotional seeing him finish in such style and all his training off.

We stayed up late that night until the last competitor came in in the qualifying time of 15 hours 40 minutes.  By that time the crowd had built in the stadium and the atmosphere was electric.

I think that was the start.  I think that was when the seed was planted.  Inspired by Dan we wondered if we could be capable.  We had been talking about endurance trail running for a while especially since G's 50 K coast path run from Port Issac back to Bude for his 50th birthday which we both loved.  We were attracted to the Ironman as with three different disciplines we would have more of a challenge and be better for possibly wrecking less havoc on our bodies all round.

So tonight I am very happy to have finally started writing and getting the blog on the roll.  We are just back from watching the new film 'The Darkest Hour' the new film about Churchill.  I am sure it was a great film but I am not the best cinema goer and as usual had to spend most of the time trying not to fidget or fall asleep.

As I am behind on writing this I have a lot to write to catch up on about the start of our preparations towards possibly becoming Iron-men.

Our next part of the adventure is a month long trip to Lanzarote with our bikes to do some training away from the storms of Cornwall.  As part of this we have found a weeks Triathlon Training Camp in a great resort right on the beach.  I think we may be a little bit out our depth.  It said on the course a camp suited to all ability levels.  However I think that meant all Triathlete ability levels.  We are not even Triathaletes.  G has never even completed a Triathlon in his life.  I have only done Bude Triathlon once but on a mountain bike as I didn't have a road bike.

Our inexperience and thoughts that that the Tri training camp may be well over head was confirmed tonight when we got the following message on the Facebook group that has been set up for our training camp..

We had to google what CSS was an  not sure we are much the wiser.  So tomorrow we are off to the pool to get our 100 metre and 400 metre times.  There may be some issues as sometimes my lane gets a little crowed with the odd breaststroker and on a bad day some back stroke so I have to a bit of overtaking and dodging people.  We are both hoping we may get under 7:30 for our 400 metre times as we managed to both achieve this when we got our Beach Lifeguard Award although we are not really sure as we haven't been doing any time trials.  Wish us luck and I will report back tomorrow.
